“Time is a current, and our job is to flow with it instead of trying to stand firm and watch it pass us by.”

-Jah

I believe that we tend to let our experiences determine our perception of time. Common phrases like “Time flies when you’re having fun.” or that feeling that you’ve been working for hours when in reality you’ve only been working for 20 minutes are a testament to that. So, with everything that’s been happening this year, I’ve realized that my perception of time has been skewed. When the pandemic got critical and we had to stay home things started to feel slow, but when my gigs slowed down, the first of the month felt like it was right around the corner.

As that was happening, the cycle of disregard for Black Life continued to revolve, and the frustration, sadness, and exhaustion made me feel like I was caught in an endless loop. It was at that time that I decided to analyze and reassign the task of my experiences, and by doing so, I’ve come to understanding that the job of an experience is to provides us with the lessons we need, and once that lesson is learned, our future reaps the benefits.

Yes, 2020 has been relentless so far, we’ve lost jobs, lives, and everything in between, but that relentlessness has also bombarded us with information about the world, about this country, and about ourselves. And it’s through our analyzation, healing, and resolve that we’ll be able build a future that will reap the benefits of the work we do today. This piece is in honor of that.
